Diwali 2023: A Celebration of Light and Prosperity/ The Festival of Lights and Prosperity

As we welcome the pleasant autumn air and long nights, an exciting festival called Diwali is about to arrive in India and beyond. Diwali, known as the "Festival of Lights", is a huge celebration full of culture and spirituality. In 2023, Diwali will light up homes and hearts on 10 November, bringing people together for a time of joy, renewal and success.

The Date and Significance of Diwali:

Diwali, or Deepawali, occurs on the 15th day of the month of Kartik in the Hindu calendar. This is a big deal as it is a festival that is all about the victory of light and good over darkness and evil. The name "Diwali" comes from "Deepavali", which means "rows of lights" in Sanskrit. This is because during this time people light up their homes and streets with lots of diyas and candles, which makes everything look magical.

There are important stories related to Diwali. One is about Lord Rama, who defeated the demon king named Ravana and returned to his kingdom Ayodhya. It's a victory for doing the right thing. It is also a time to pray to Goddess Lakshmi, who brings wealth and success. Families clean their homes, light lamps and offer prayers to welcome his blessings.

Emotional Moments and Traditions:

Diwali is not just about rituals; It is a time for families to be together and share feelings. People come from different places to celebrate, exchange gifts and make special memories. Lighting a lamp is meant to illuminate not only the outside but also the inside, dispelling the darkness of our hearts and minds. People also pray for their loved ones and the world.

It is indeed a lovely tradition to exchange delicious sweets and gifts. Giving and receiving gifts is a way of spreading happiness and showing kindness. Sweets like ladoo, barfi and halwa are made at home and bought from shops to share with family and friends.

Delicious Sweets and Food:

Diwali is a time when kitchens turn into magical places where wonderful dishes and sweets are cooked up. Sweets are a big part of the celebration. Here are some favourites:

1. Laddus: These round sweets are made from different things like gram flour or coconut. Motichoor and besan laddoos are the most popular.

2. Barfi: These are like fudge with different flavours. From the classic milk based variant to the chocolate barfi, they are loved by all.

3. Pudding: Made from ingredients like semolina or carrots, halwa is a sweet dish often topped with nuts. Gajar ka halwa is special for Diwali.

4. Chakli: If you like salty then chakli is perfect. It is crispy and made from rice and lentil flour with flavourful spices.

5. Gulab Jamuns: Soft fritters soaked in sugar syrup – Gulab Jamuns are a favourite. They're rich and sweet, perfect for celebrating.

What Diwali teaches us:

Diwali is not just for one group; Its message is for everyone. It's about getting rid of darkness - whether it's not knowing, hate, or bad feelings. It is about choosing the light like love and togetherness. Diwali shows how we can do better when we are kind and work together.

As the 2nd of November approaches, houses will be lit up with lights, colorful designs on the floor and beautiful decorations. Families would get together, share stories, laugh and cook delicious food. Diwali 2023 is not just a festival; It reminds us that even in difficult times, light can shine, and that we can find joy and hope no matter what.
